WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a form of physical fitness that was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. During this period, Pilates was designed to aid injured soldiers in regaining their health by strengthening, stretching and stabilizing key muscles. Joe preferred fewer, more precise movements requiring control and technique over increased repetition – he called his method “Contrology”. The eight fundamental principles of Pilates are correct alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, relaxation, flowing movement and stamina which all work together to establish a perfect working body from the inside out.
Pilates classes build strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening the body, rather than shortening the muscles. The focus is on the core which is often referred to as the “powerhouse” of your body. Your core is the area between your shoulders and pelvis (without your arms and legs) and encompasses all the muscles within this area. Because of this focus, Pilates is popular not only in the field of fitness but is also revered as a popular healing system for rehabilitation by doctors and physical therapists.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM PRACTICING PILATES?
Joseph Pilates said that Pilates “is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work”. He further went on to claim that “in 10 sessions you will feel the difference. In 20 sessions you will see the difference and in 30 sessions you will have a whole new body.”
You can expect overall slimming, greatly improved flexibility and increased mobility, even in just a short space of time. Alignment and postural correction will have you holding yourself differently, standing taller, sitting straighter and moving with better balance and coordination. You will also feel an inner strength and heightened body awareness. After a Pilates session you will leave with increased energy levels, a clear and focused mindset and a body that feels strong and in control.
